What to wear for your Maternity Photo Shoot

Choosing what to wear for your maternity photos can be a mind field, and that human you’re growing inside you can add another level of difficulty to what is already a tough thing! So here are my tips to consider when picking your outfit for a maternity session!

Shape

You want to choose something which is flattering and shows off your bump, not hides it. Picking something which is either tight all over, or tight on the top half of your body and flowy over your belly and you can pull in tight is optimal. Try to choose something that has some shape and structure to it, For example a T-Shirt dress, will hide your shape and bump, pick something that can be chinced in to your belly to show off how amazing your body is! I find floor length is a great length as the dress can just flow and doesn’t fall weirdly when coming over your belly.

Colour

This really depends on the style of your session, Try to avoid darker colours, as you can loose the detail and shape in the shadows. Try to choose colours that are complimentary to the type of session you’re having without blending in. For example, if your session is in the forrest, you want to avoid Browns and greens so you don’t blend into the background!

Pattern

Solid colours are always my preference, mainly because choosing patterns can be tricky business, choosing a pattern too small and your image can look busy, choosing a pattern that’s too large and you run the risk of looking like a couch (do I need to remind you of that dress Kim K wore while pregnant to the Met Gala?) I normally recommend sticking with solid colors or if you do want something with detail, choose something like a lace which has a pattern within it. P.s. Photoshop is SO MUCH harder with patterned clothing as I have to match up the pattern as well as the placement, so any nip and tucks, head swapping or any other photoshopping becomes a bit harder!

Weather

Remember to dress for the weather, If your shoot is in summer, pick a dress which is light and flowy. Winter? pick something with long sleeves that you can pair with a chunky cardigan or the likes.

Partner

As with any session, I always suggest to try and coordinate with your partner without being too matchy matchy! pick similar colour pallets and make sure you’re wearing the same “dress code” you might look amazing and ready for a Gala ball, you don’t want your partner wearing sandals and thongs!
